The St. Paul Mounted Police Unit was established in July
1995. It consists of 6 full time
officers operating city wide. All St. Paul patrol horses
are geldings standing a minimum of 16 hands tall which allows our officers to
see over vehicles and crowds. The St. Paul Mounted Patrol duties
range from crowd control to traffic enforcement. Each rider must complete an 8 week course in
which they learn basic equitation followed by officer safety techniques,
defensive tactics and hand gun use.
In the Coliseum demonstrations, learn how the members of the
Mounted Unit are trained and watch as they demonstrate defensive tactics from
horseback including upper and lower body attach, pinning a suspect against a
wall and pushing an unruly suspect.
In the AgStar demonstrations, see a suspect apprehension and
handcuffing, a traffic stop, a variety of emergency dismounts, donning of riot
gear and gas mask, and finally formation riding and crowd control.
